5. Poisoning Regulation, Research, Health, and the Environment: The Glyphosate-Based Herbicides Case in Canada

"Despite discourse advocating pesticide reduction, there has been an exponential increase in pesticide use worldwide in the agricultural sector over the last 30 years. Glyphosate-Based Herbicides (GBHs) are the most widely used pesticides on the planet as well as in Canada, where a total of almost 470 million kilograms of declared “active” ingredient glyphosate was sold between 2007 and 2018. GBHs accounted for 58% of pesticides used in the agriculture sector in Canada in 2017. While the independent scientific literature on the harmful health and environmental impacts of pesticides such as GBHs is overwhelming, Canada has only banned 32 “active” pesticide ingredients out of 531 banned in 168 countries, and reapproved GBHs in 2017 until 2032. This article, based on interdisciplinary and intersectoral research, will analyze how as a result of the scientific and regulatory captures of relevant Canadian agencies by the pesticide industry, the Canadian regulation and scientific assessment of pesticides are deficient and lagging behind other countries, using the GBH case as a basis for analysis. It will show how, by embracing industry narratives and biased evidence, by being receptive to industry demands, and by opaque decision making and lack of transparency, Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency (PMRA) promotes commercial interests over the imperatives of public health and environmental protection."

"The governments of Switzerland and France have been accused of breaching the human rights of their citizens by not acting decisively enough on climate change, at a landmark legal hearing in Strasbourg. A panel of judges at the European court of human rights heard petitions from a group of Swiss women and a French former mayor seeking to bolster climate action in their countries. Although climate litigation has spread quickly around the world, these are the first such cases to be heard by the ECHR. In the first lawsuit, a group of Swiss women over the age of 64 known as the KlimaSeniorinnen Schweiz (Senior Women for Climate Protection Switzerland) argued they were particularly vulnerable to the climate crisis because heatwaves, which are becoming more frequent and intense, put their health at risk."

"Am vergangenen Wochenende haben sich 30.000 Menschen auf dem Land in Frankreich versammelt, um gegen ein Mega-Wasserbecken zu protestieren - ein riesiges offenes Wasserreservoir, das der Aufrechterhaltung der industriellen Landwirtschaft dient und sich als Katastrophe für das Grundwasser und die Umwelt im Allgemeinen erwiesen hat. Die Aktion war Teil eines Aktionstages, der vom Kollektiv "Les soulèvments de la Terre" (die Aufstände der Erde) organisiert wurde.

Der Staat hat mehr als 3 200 Polizisten eingesetzt, die mit Kriegswaffen ausgerüstet waren. Mehr als 4 000 Granaten wurden auf die Demonstrant_Innen abgefeuert und verletzten unzählige von ihnen. Zwei Personen liegen noch immer im Koma und kämpfen um ihr Leben. Es gibt Beweise dafür, dass die Polizeikräfte die Rettungsdienste aktiv daran gehindert haben, den Opfern zu helfen.Der Innenminister hat ein Verfahren zur Auflösung der « Aufstände der Erde » eingeleitet, eine gesetzliche Form der Repression.

Unsere Botschaft ist ein Aufruf zur Solidarität und wir hoffen, dass er bei euch auf offene Ohren stößt, ihr ihn unterzeichnet und mithelft ihn weiter zu verbreiten. Wir sind uns bewußt darüber, dass einige von euch diese Art der Unterdrückung täglich erleben, und zwar unter Regimen, die noch brutaler sein können. Wir erkennen auch an, dass der Einsatz von Waffen und juristischen Manövern in Frankreich zuerst und vor allem eingesetzt wurde, um BIPoC Menschen ins Visier zu nehmen. Wir behaupten nicht, dass das, womit wir es hier zu tun haben, einzigartig ist: Es ist Teil eines größeren Systems von Gewalt, Herrschaft, Extraktion und Rassismus, welches wir entschlossen bekämpfen wollen, heute mehr denn je."

Der Weltklimarat IPCC hat am Montag den neuesten globalen Synthesebericht veröffentlicht. Demnach entwickelt sich die Welt mit den aktuell umgesetzten Klimapolitiken auf eine Erwärmung zwischen 2,2 bis 3,5 Grad Celsius bis 2100 zu. Die 1,5-Grad-Celsius-Schwelle würde bereits vor 2035 erreicht. Dazu kommt, dass gravierende Wetterextreme und ihre Folgen schon bei geringerer Erwärmung auftreten können als bisher gedacht. Der Synthesebericht zeigt auch, dass junge Menschen durch die Klimakrise besonders gefährdet sind. Mit raschem und tiefgreifendem Handeln können die Folgen stark gemildert werden."

These are approached as mechanisms of appropriation of resources that produce social, economic and ecological implications to be considered in the current agrarian question debates. By analysing the implementation and outcomes of green policies, the author shows that new strategies of capital accumulation arise through the creation of new commodities, markets, vehicles of accumulation and ways of legitimising capital accumulation."
